Students: vectorize your images for free
Updated on
A student can vectorize images for free with Homotope: the workshop runs in the browser with no account, and SVG and PNG downloads are unlimited (except transparent background and recolouring, Pro), without the image being uploaded anywhere.
PNG · 600 × 600 px
What is free, with no account
- Drop a PNG, JPG or WebP into the workshop, pick a preset and compare before and after with the slider.
- Download the SVG, copy it, or export an upscaled PNG (up to ×8) for a poster.
- Enforce your own swatches (“Fixed palette”): no colour is invented.
Homotope traces in your browser: the engine runs on your own machine, in a Web Worker, and your image is sent nowhere unless you save it to your account or ask for server processing. The workshop opens without an account and without a usage limit: tracing, preview, SVG and PNG exports are free, except transparent background and recolouring (Pro). Production exports are converted in your browser too.
By subject
- Graphic design: a society logo you received as a blurry JPEG becomes a sharp SVG, ready for the poster or the website (vectorize a blurry logo).
- Architecture: a photographed façade sketch becomes a clean drawing for your boards; “Line art” preset (pencil sketch to SVG).
- Engineering: a scanned diagram or pictogram turns into vector art for a report or a poster, sharp at any size.
- Communication: an illustration reduced to a few colours for a poster or social media, imported into Canva, Figma or Inkscape (which format, how to import it).
- Makerspace: a DXF for the laser cutter or a single-stroke trace for the plotter (laser guide); these are production exports, and they are counted.
The limits, honestly
There is no student plan and no discount: what is free is free for everyone. Production exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations, single stroke) need an account; when you create it, they are unlimited for 7 days, once per Google identity.
Production exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations): 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro; without Pro, 1 credit each beyond those 2. Prices are on the Pricing page.
A photo becomes a posterised image, never a continuous gradient. And vectorizing an image gives you no rights to it: credit the source of any image that is not yours.
Frequently asked questions
Does Homotope have a student discount?
No, there is no discount or student-only plan: tracing, the preview and SVG and PNG downloads are free for everyone, with no account and no limit, except transparent background and recolouring (Pro).
Do I need an account for a school project?
Not for SVG and PNG. An account (Google sign-in) is for production exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations) and for keeping your results in a gallery.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No, processing runs in your browser. The image only reaches the server if you save it to your account or ask for server processing yourself.
Can I use it on a university computer or on my phone?
Yes, the workshop opens in a recent browser with nothing to install, on a computer as well as on a phone.
