Can ChatGPT vectorize an image?

Updated on

Not by itself: ChatGPT has no vectorizer, it describes the image and points you to a tool; for a real SVG traced from your pixels, open the Homotope workshop in your browser (free, no account, nothing uploaded) or, if your ChatGPT accepts custom MCP servers, connect the Homotope connector.

Coffee roaster logo grabbed from a website, as a noisy compressed JPEG: a coffee bean on a dark disc inside a thin ring, capital wordmark. JPG · 900 × 640 px

What ChatGPT does when you ask it to vectorize

ChatGPT is a language model: it reads the image, describes it and suggests tools. If it writes an SVG, it is a drawing recomposed from its description, not a trace of your pixels: a logo’s outlines, letters and shading are not followed. If it produces an image, that is pixels again (PNG). For a faithful SVG you need a vectorizer, and ChatGPT can call one.

The simplest way: the workshop, in your browser

  1. Save the image from the conversation (right-click or the download button).
  2. Open the workshop and drop it in, or paste it.
  3. Pick a preset: Logo for flat colours, Illustration for a shaded drawing, Line art for a sketch.
  4. Download the SVG, or an enlarged PNG.

The job runs in your browser, with no account: free SVG and PNG, except transparent background and recolouring, which are Pro. For a logo, see vectorize a logo.

Nothing leaves your computer: see vectorize without uploading.

Production exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations): 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro; without Pro, 1 credit each beyond those 2. The details: how much vectorizing costs.

Inside ChatGPT: the Homotope connector (MCP server)

Homotope is not listed in the ChatGPT apps directory: the server is added by hand, by its address, with the same sign-in to your account.

  1. Add. In ChatGPT’s settings, where OpenAI accepts a custom MCP server (eligible plans are decided on OpenAI’s side), add the server at https://homotope.app/mcp.
  2. Sign in. ChatGPT opens Homotope’s sign-in page: Google account, then authorisation.
  3. Ask. Attach the image: “Vectorize this logo to SVG”, a DXF for cutting, “Ready to cut?”.

The tools are Claude’s: vectorize_image, get_job, get_svg, get_result, check_cut, list_vectorizations, suggest_preset, get_preview, read_printer_template, detailed on the Connectors page; the steps from the directory are described for Claude. To cut access: “My account”, “Connected applications”, “Revoke”.

Through an assistant, every job is a server job: the image is sent to Homotope, and the job counts against the 2 free trial jobs of the month (the same ones as in the web app), then the Pro quota (100 server jobs a month), then credits. In the browser, nothing is sent.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT give me an SVG directly?

It can write the code of a simple SVG from its description: a redrawn picture, not a trace. For a faithful SVG it needs a vectorizer: the workshop, or the Homotope connector.

Is it free?

Yes in the workshop: free SVG and PNG, no account, except transparent background and recolouring, which are Pro. Through the connector it is a server job: the 2 free trial jobs of the month, then the Pro quota, then credits. An interrupted or failed job is given back to you; the one exception: a free trial job stopped because it exceeds 2 minutes or the server’s memory.

Is my image uploaded?

No in the workshop: everything happens in your browser. Yes through the connector: the image is processed on Homotope’s server.

Is Homotope in the ChatGPT apps directory?

Not as of today. Wherever ChatGPT accepts a custom MCP server, the server is added by hand, by its address, with the same sign-in to your account; in Claude, Homotope is in the connectors directory.
