Logo to DXF for laser cutting: from PNG to a ready file
Updated on
To convert a PNG or JPG logo to DXF for laser cutting, trace it in Homotope with the Logo preset, pick the DXF format, run the cut-readiness check and download it.
JPG · 400 × 400 px
The DXF Homotope writes
- DXF R12 ASCII, in millimetres (1 pixel = 1 point = 0.353 mm).
- One closed polyline per contour, holes included; curves flattened to 0.1 px by default.
- One layer per colour, named after its colour or your palette: one colour, one power setting.
- The background is left out by default (« Inclure le fond (cadre) » keeps it).
- The SVG anti-seam stroke is never exported: no second cut of the same contour.
Homotope traces in your browser: the engine runs on your own machine, in a Web Worker, and your image is sent nowhere unless you save it to your account or ask for a server computation. The workshop opens without an account and without a usage limit: tracing, preview, SVG and PNG exports are free. Fabrication exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations): 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro; the conversion stays in your browser.
Other ways to do it
To our knowledge, as of 4 October 2026, Inkscape, a free desktop application, includes a built-in tracer (“Trace Bitmap”) (source: Inkscape documentation), and LightBurn imports SVG and DXF files (source: LightBurn documentation). Homotope’s DXF opens in your cutting software like any R12 DXF.
Check before you fire the laser
Before sending the file to the machine, the « Prêt pour la découpe ? » (“ready to cut?”) section of the Export panel analyses the DXF you would download: open contours, overlaps, self-intersections and double cuts (blocking), details finer than your tool diameter, tiny islands and overloaded contours (to check). Clicking a problem highlights it on the preview. « Simplifier pour la découpe » (“simplify for cutting”) writes a separate DXF and leaves your result untouched.
Set « Diamètre de l’outil (mm) » (tool diameter) to your beam width (0.2 mm by default): two lines closer than that are flagged.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PNG to DXF for free?
Drop the PNG into the Homotope workshop, pick DXF in the Export panel and download. The conversion happens in your browser; DXF is a fabrication export: 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro.
Is the DXF in millimetres?
Yes, in millimetres, with 1 image pixel as 1 point, that is 0.353 mm. Scale the design in your laser software.
Which DXF version?
DXF R12 ASCII (AC1009) with closed polylines: an old, simple format with no SPLINE or LWPOLYLINE entities.
What about engraving a line instead of cutting a shape?
Use the Single stroke preset (« Trait unique »): it traces the axis of each stroke in one pass, as open polylines in the DXF.
