Convert a JPG to SVG, without the compression artefacts

Updated on

To convert a JPG to SVG, drop it into the Homotope workshop, keep the Logo or Illustration preset and download the SVG: the JPEG blocks and halo disappear and edges become sharp again, for free and without uploading.

Why a JPG traces badly elsewhere

JPEG compresses the image in small blocks and blurs sharp edges: around a logo it leaves a halo of in-between colours. A naive vectorizer turns it into dozens of tiny stray shapes. Homotope’s Logo preset smooths over a range suited to JPEG noise and straightens lines: the ring stays a circle, the star keeps its points, and each colour becomes a single flat area again.

Steps in the workshop

The workshop interface is in French; the button names are quoted below in French with their meaning.

  1. Open the workshop and drop the JPG or JPEG (or paste it).
  2. Pick Logo for a logo or pictogram, Illustration for a drawing, « Noir et blanc » (black and white) for a silhouette or stencil.
  3. If a stray tint remains, lower « Nombre de couleurs » (number of colours) in the advanced panel.
  4. Download the SVG; for the printer, PDF and EPS start from the same geometry.

Homotope traces in your browser: the engine runs on your own machine, in a Web Worker, and your image is sent nowhere unless you save it to your account or ask for a server computation. The workshop opens without an account and without a usage limit: tracing, preview, SVG and PNG exports are free. Fabrication exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations): 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro; the conversion stays in your browser.

Scanned sketch, white background: special cases

Honest limit: a heavily compressed photo keeps its gradients as bands, not smooth curves, and text a few pixels high does not become legible again. Start from the largest, least compressed JPG you have.

Frequently asked questions

Is converting a JPG to SVG free?

Yes, tracing and the SVG download are free, with no account. Fabrication exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations): 2 free per month with an account, then 1 credit each, unlimited with Pro.

Are JPG and JPEG the same thing?

Yes, they are two extensions of the same format. The workshop also takes PNG and WebP.

Is my JPG uploaded to the internet?

No, the computation runs in your browser. The image only reaches the server if you save it to your account or ask for a server computation.

How do I remove the white background of my JPG?

In the Palette panel, use « Rendre transparent » (make transparent) on the background colour: the preview is free, the download needs Pro or the 7-day trial.
