How do I vectorize a blurry, low-resolution logo?
Updated on
Drop the logo into the Homotope workshop with the Logo preset and change nothing else: JPEG artefacts and fuzzy edges disappear, each colour becomes a clean flat area again, and you download the SVG for free, with no account.
JPG · 400 × 400 px
Steps in the workshop
- Find the largest version of the logo (website, email signature, an old PDF) and drop it into the workshop, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
- Keep the Logo preset: flat colours, sharp corners, up to 16 colours chosen automatically. Below 256 px, the image is upsampled automatically before tracing.
- Compare with the slider while zoomed in on points and curves. If a stray tint remains along the edges, lower “Number of colours” in the “Advanced” panel.
- Download the SVG, or use “Copy SVG”.
Nothing leaves your computer: see vectorize without uploading.
Why the Logo preset is often enough
The demo below is exactly this case: a 400 px compressed JPEG logo grabbed from the web. The Logo preset smooths large arcs so the ring stays a circle, keeps the star’s edges straight despite blunted corners, and absorbs the anti-aliasing band into the neighbouring colour. Halos and stepped edges are covered on the jagged edges or halo page; the general method is on vectorize a logo.
Production exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations): 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro; without Pro, 1 credit each beyond those 2. The details: how much vectorizing costs.
Honest limits
- A 32 px logo does not hold the detail: upscaling it before tracing invents nothing.
- Text a few pixels high stays approximate, sometimes illegible. Homotope follows the edges of the image; it does not recognise the typeface or redraw it as live text. For crisp text, set it again in the original font in your drawing software.
- A gradient or a drop shadow becomes bands of colour.
Frequently asked questions
Should I sharpen the logo before tracing it?
No, drop it as it is: the Logo preset is tuned for a compressed JPEG. Sharpening can add halos that turn into shapes.
My logo is only 100 px wide, is that too small?
It is upscaled before tracing and the large shapes come out clean, but small details and thin text cannot come back.
Is the resulting SVG free?
Yes, with no account and no limit, except transparent background and recolouring (Pro). PDF and EPS for the printer are production exports: 2 free per month with an account, then 1 credit each, unlimited with Pro.
Is the logo uploaded to a server?
No, it is traced in your browser and only reaches the server if you save it to your account.
