A clean SVG for Cricut and Silhouette Cameo, from any image
Updated on
To cut an image on a Cricut or a Silhouette, trace it in Homotope, export a DXF checked by the cut-readiness check or an SVG, then import it into Design Space or Silhouette Studio.

Why go through a vector
A cutting machine follows outlines. A PNG or JPG has none: the machine software has to guess them. A clean SVG or DXF gives closed, non-duplicated outlines that the blade follows as they are.
Homotope traces in your browser: the engine runs on your own machine, in a Web Worker, and your image is sent nowhere unless you save it to your account or ask for a server computation. The workshop opens without an account and without a usage limit: tracing, preview, SVG and PNG exports are free. Fabrication exports (DXF, EPS, PDF, separations): 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro; the conversion stays in your browser.
What the machine software accepts
To our knowledge, as of 4 October 2026, Cricut Design Space can import SVG files, and DXF files on desktop only, not on iOS or Android (source: Cricut help). To our knowledge, as of the same date, the free edition of Silhouette Studio imports DXF, while SVG import requires a paid edition (source: Silhouette America). With the free edition, export DXF.
What Homotope adds before cutting
The workshop interface is in French; the button names are quoted below in French with their meaning.
- « Découpé » (cut) mode: no shape overlaps another, each border is cut once per adjacent face; in the DXF, « Fusionner les frontières communes » (merge shared borders) cuts it only once.
- The background is left out of the DXF by default: no frame cut around your design.
- One layer per colour in the DXF, one layer per colour in the SVG: one vinyl per layer.
Before sending the file to the machine, the « Prêt pour la découpe ? » (“ready to cut?”) section of the Export panel analyses the DXF you would download: open contours, overlaps, self-intersections and double cuts (blocking), details finer than your tool diameter, tiny islands and overloaded contours (to check). Clicking a problem highlights it on the preview. « Simplifier pour la découpe » (“simplify for cutting”) writes a separate DXF and leaves your result untouched.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make an SVG for Cricut from an image?
Open the Homotope workshop, drop the image, pick the Logo or Line art preset, then download the SVG and import it into Design Space.
Which format for Silhouette Studio, SVG or DXF?
Homotope exports both. To our knowledge, the free edition of Silhouette Studio imports DXF, while SVG requires a paid edition.
At what size will the design be cut?
The export counts 1 pixel as 1 point, that is 0.353 mm. Resize the design in the machine software to the size you want.
Do I need an account?
Not to trace and export SVG or PNG: it all happens in your browser, with no account. DXF is a fabrication export: 2 free per month with an account, unlimited with Pro. The account also saves your results.
